Considering a PPO dental plan

May 5, 2008

Words like HMO, or PPO sound more like talk for health insurance matters, and employment benefits.  So how does it fit into dental plans?  They are actually very similar.  Most popular dental plans fall into the realm of ppo dental plans.

A ppo dental plan network is one that does not require referrals. They permit visits to multiple services outside of a network but usually at a greater expense than in-network services. It’s similar to an hmo, but payment is received as it care is provided rather than in advance.  It’s usually in the form of a scheduled fee. A ppo dental plan may also offer more flexibility by allowing for visits to out-of-network professionals sometimes at a greater expense to the policyholder.

A ppo dental plan is also a network of physicians and hospitals that have agreed, by contract, to discount their rates to their members. The networks are typically very large, and the members are free to seek care from any physician or provider within the network, including specialists without a referral.
